SYRACUSE GRAND PRIX

HEARTACHE FOR MUSSO, JOY FOR BEHRA

The first European F.1 race of the 1957 season took place down in the south-east corner of Sicily at the very fast triangular road circuit on the western edge of the city of Siracusa - or Syracuse as we call it. Green appeared on the starting grid for the first time that year in the shape of the two Vanwalls. The cars were beautifully turned out in their dark green colours with Stirling Moss' car having a white nose and Tony Brooks' a yellow one. That was not all. There were three Connaughts, for Ivor Bueb, Jack Fairman and Peter Walker and there were even two little Formula 2 Cooper Climaxes for Jack Brabham and George Wicken. Thus, almost half of the sixteen starters were green.....

Ferrari decided to send two cars down south, to be driven by Italy's number one driver Luigi Musso and Peter Collins who was leading the World Championship at this point by virtue of his victory in Argentina. Thus the remainder of the entry was all Maseratis. Factory cars for Jean Behra and Harry Schell; two cars from the Scuderia Centro Sud for veteran Italian Piero Taruffi and the German Hans Herrmann; in addition, privately owned cars from Italy, Spain and England, driven by Luigi Piotti, Paco Godia-Sales and Bruce Halford respectively.

Luigi Musso drove a magnificent race and looked on course for patriotic victory, only to run into car problems on what should have been his final lap. The car stopped half way around that lap and the young Italian could only watch in despair as the only three cars that he had not lapped, sailed past, leaving him to be given a token 4th place as the first driver to complete 79 laps. Behra had driven beautifully and inherited the win, having led a mere half a lap, but it was the important half a lap! Collins came in second but more than 20 seconds behind the Maserati with Moss and Brooks giving Vanwall a solid first race with 3rd and 5th, sandwiching the unfortunate Musso
