BUENOS AIRES GRAND PRIX

MOSS STRIKES BACK FOR MASERATI

A second F.1 race was run at the Buenos Aires autodrome at the beginning of the 1957 season. This was not a World Championship race but presumably was organised to make the long trip from Europe a little more worthwhile. Although run at the same circuit as the Grand Prix the previous weekend, a different, longer variation of track was used. The original intention was for the race to be run in two 30 lap heats with the results determined by the addition of times but in the end and for reasons not explained, the organisers curtailed proceedings after the first heat.

Ferrari retained the six cars from the previous weekend but Gonzales went off to drive his own Ferrari which could be classed as a 500 or a 625, with a 4 cylinder engine. His place in the factory 801 was taken by the German driver Wolfgang von Trips who joined Collins, Hawthorn, Castellotti, Musso and Perdisa.

The Maserati squad was unchanged from the Grand Prix with Fangio, Behra, Moss, Schell and Menditeguy being joined by Italian Giogio Scarlatti who replaced Bonnier in 250.F 2505.

Piotti's Maserati was down to be shared by himself and de Tomaso but as only one heat was run, it was de Tomaso who got to drive.

Practice showed that Maserati had been working hard on their cars and they proved to be more competitive than at the earlier race. Indeed, when the first (and only) heat came to an end, it was Stirling Moss who held off a strong challenge from Peter Collins, to win the race by a small margin. Debutant von Trips was an excellent third ahead of a still very dissatisfied Fangio.

HERE IS THE RESULT OF THE THE 30 LAP RACE run on Buenos Aires circuit #4.
