ARGENTINE GRAND PRIX

COLLINS HEADS FERRARI CLEAN SWEEP

The only cars that arrived for the first race of the new F.1 season were red ones. No French or British cars made the trip to South America where two races were timetabled, both at the Buenos Aires circuit, though on different versions of the track.

The Scuderia Ferrari sent no less than six of their new 801 models, now barely showing any similarities with the original Lancia D.50s that were inherited by Enzo at the end of 1955. They are sometimes still called D.50s but I prefer the 801 nomenclature. The drivers for these cars were the two Brits Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins, with three Italians, Eugenio Castellotti, Luigi Musso and Cesare Perdisa being joined just for this race by the 34 year-old Argentine Froilan Gonzales. There was also an older Ferrari 500, driven by local driver Alessandro de Tomaso.

Ranged against the cars from Maranello were seven cars from down the road in Modena. The Maserati factory shipped over five of the beautiful 250.Fs in their latest body shape, while there were two of the older shaped 250.Fs for Jo Bonnier and Luigi Piotti. The five factory drivers were Juan Manuel Fangio and Carlos Menditeguy from Argentina, Jean Behra from France, Franco-American Harry Schell and arguably the finest driver ever to emerge from the British Isles, Stirling Moss.

For the 1957 season, all the factory cars from Ferrari and Maserati carried different colour noses, presumably for recognition purposes.

Practice showed that Ferrari were in very good shape while the Maseratis were suffering from all sorts of teething problems and so it proved on race day too. Three of the factory Maseratis retired - Fangio, Menditeguy and Moss, and although Schell and Behra finished the race they were overwhelmed by the Ferraris who comfortably took the first four places in the 100 lap race.

HERE IS THE RESULT OF THE THE 100 LAP RACE run on Buenos Aires circuit #2.
